This post is to demonstrate how each newly-installed driver interacts with Windows 7 Device Manager for the Sony Vaio model VPCEB36GM, manufactured around 2011, but this may apply for other, similar Core2Duo-class laptops manufactured around the same time. This laptop is starting to feel ancient. The networking chipset includes WiMAX (completely useless), there is no built-in bluetooth, and there are no USB 3.0 ports.
Many times immediately after installing Windows 7, your computer will have a few yellow triangles with exclamation points in Device Manager, and often you have no clue which driver will make the exclamation point go away, particularly when the device is described as 'Unknown Device'. I suggest downloading all drivers from the manufacturer's website before starting Windows 7 Setup, and putting all of the drivers in a folder on another partition (separate from your Windows primary partition). Install all of them immediately after Win7 Setup completes, and all of the straggler exclamation points should disappear. If you're curious as to exactly what each driver does in Device Manager, as I was, here is a breakdown for my ancient laptop:
Hitachi DVD-RAM firmware update KS06
I didn't notice any change in Device Manager after installing this update. Since this was a firmware update, I only had to install this once and will not need to ever again.
Unless otherwise stated, none of the following driver installations requires a reboot.
In Device Manager, click on Action | Scan for hardware changes to refresh the device tree. After the refresh, you may see several red Xs. Disregard them for now.

In Display adapters, Standard VGA Graphics Adapter changes to Intel HD Graphics.
In Monitors, Generic non-PNP Monitor changes to Generic PNP Monitor.

I didn't notice any change in Device Manager after installing this update and rebooting twice. (All that rebooting for what?!)

Note: The SD card reader does not work until you install the Memory Card drivers - even if you never use Memory Cards!

I think this update needs Ricoh PCIe Memory Stick Controller (below) to be installed, in order to take effect.
Up until now, none of the updates have extinguished the 6 yellow triangles with the exclamation points.

I used to see a yellow triangle for BCM20702A0. This was for the bluetooth adapter that I had plugged into one of my USB ports. I stopped using bluetooth because it was so flaky and unreliable. The driver would spontaneously half-uninstall itself into a kind of limbo state seemingly every other day.

Here is something I found :
Hi, I have found the solution. If you go in device manager, click on the pci simple communications controller, go in property and then go in details. You will see a code like per example PCI/VEN_8086&DEV_27D8&SUBSYS...
The VEN code means vendor and the DEV code means device: in my case the vendor is 8086 and the device is 27D8.
Once you have the two codes, go to PCI Vendor and Device Lists Enter the two codes and you should get the name of your hardware. From there you can search for a driver download for your hardware.
In my case the pci simple communications controller was a Microsoft UAA Bus HD audio. I also had another pci device that didn't work properly, using the same method I found out that my pci device was an HSF PCI internal modem with code number CX11252-11. I had a hard time downloading one of the drivers, after 6 or 7 times the download started so be patient if you have the same hardware.
